PSPLA Decision

Kia ora koutou members and supporters. Members will recall that we have highlighted an ongoing investigation by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) into whether or not external health and safety auditors and investigators need to be licensed under their legislation. A detailed legal submission was made on behalf of HASANZ whilst NZISM also made its own, presented in person by Robyn Bennett. Karl Berendt and I joined online whilst Jodi Wright from NZSC also attended. ...

Canterbury conference

Kia ora koutou members and supporters. Last week I attended the Canterbury CPD Conference, Sharing Solutions for a Stronger Future, which was held in conjunction with NZOHNA. It was wonderful to see so many health and safety practitioners and professionals gathered to engage in face-to-face networking and professional development. I’d like to extend my gratitude to all those involved in delivering this conference. It’s a massive undertaking with many hours of work contributed by local volunteers, the national office, and our generous speakers and sponsors. I enjoyed hearing from a variety of experts, who came together to share their knowledge and experience for the benefit of all who attended. ...

CEO Update 24/8/22

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. This week officially marks five years since I joined this wonderful organisation and I couldn’t be prouder of the progress we have made. When I stepped into the role, I had no experience working in health and safety. There was such a huge learning curve to conquer. I was very aware of my limited ability to speak on behalf of the profession. Thankfully I had Greg Dearsly as President by my side, who fulfilled the role of member representative and H&S expert for NZISM. ...

Presidents's blog - ISO 37000

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. A book review: I’m always on the lookout for a good read, and this week I took the time to settle down with a copy of the International Standard ISO 37000 Governance of Organisations – Guidance (2021). I’ll be honest, it’s not the type of book that’s going to keep you up to 2am just to get to the last chapter, and it did take a couple of goes. However, as far as standards go, it’s one that makes you think about how organisations’ are governed, and how we could be better and potentially more strategic in our approach. ...

CEO Update 27/7/22

Kia ora koutou members and supporters. One of my biggest takeaways from the Masterclass series with Dr John Green so far has been the reframing of the value add of the H&S professional/practitioner. He determined the role of the safety practitioner is to build resilience in organisations, to act as a catalyst and drive change. While there have been many attempts to define the profession, and the value we offer, this has most succinctly and clearly articulated that value proposition to me. ...

PSPSLA Update

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. We are now seeing further implications of the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010 (PSPPI Act) on health and safety investigators and auditors with the release of several documents. (As a quick reminder, there were questions on whether the requirements of the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) apply to health and safety investigators and auditors.) The documents released are a legal opinion and an investigation report prepared for the Chief Investigator (CIPU) and the PSPLA, both of which can be accessed at the bottom of this update. ...

Leadership update

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michelle Carter who has been the Branch Manager at Southland for several years now. Under Michelle’s leadership, the Southland Branch held two very successful trade shows. The trade shows enabled Southland to showcase the health and safety expertise in the region and provided businesses with the opportunity to promote their products and services. Delivering these types of successful events takes a lot of hard work and dedication and I’d like to personally acknowledge Michelle’s contribution. ...

What value in HSMS?

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. Chris Peace (Lecturer in Occupational Health and Safety at Victoria University of Wellington) recently shared an interesting article on research undertaken by Harvard Business School which looked at whether there is any value in having a health and safety management system standard in place. It considers application of OHSAS 18001 and looks at the safety performance of both adopters and non-adopters. ...

International Womens Week #BreaktheBias

Kia ora members and supporters. Someone recently commented on the volunteering undertaken by our organisation's leaders and how impressive it was that people could commit to volunteering when they had full-time jobs, careers, and often businesses to manage. The Art of Giving

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. I’m rather over watching the news. To be honest, all the doom and crises that is reported nightly is starting to reduce my capacity for kindness and positivity, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that sentiment. So it was wonderful to have recent inspiration from the NZISM community. ...

Looking After Ourselves and Others

Kia ora koutou members and supporters, I hope you all managed to take time out over the holidays and get some respite from work life. Something that has become obvious already is that this will not be a year of recovery from COVID but will continue to push our limits and test our resilience. We have now spent more time in this pandemic than any one of us could have imagined, and noting the experience of Omicron internationally, this year will see impacts to supply chains and workforces right across the nation. ...

PSP Licensing Authority Update

Kia ora koutou members and supporters of NZISM. I thought I’d take this opportunity to update you on the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (Licensing Authority) situation. As a quick recap: In June 2020, the Licensing Authority issued an important decision regarding the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010 (the Act). The decision highlighted [14] “…the definition of private investigator to cover all people in the business of carrying out investigations into a person’s character, actions or behaviour…”. ...
