Join the NZISM Canterbury Branch as they welcome presenter Brent Sutton to the first branch meeting of the year.

The term Learning Teams continues to gain popularity as a method to learn from events and it is commonly referenced as a way to operationalise Safety Differently, Safety II, New View of Safety or HOP (Human Organisational Performance).

Learning Teams comes from the original work of Dr Todd Conklin and his 2016 book Better Questions - An Applied Approach to Operational Learning

In 2018, a New Zealand based safety practitioner and NZISM member Brent Sutton, started a collaboration with Dr Todd Conklin, on the application of Learning Teams to better understand events, the impact on workers of management of change and how to learn from everyday work “why things go right”.

In 2020 the book “The Practice of Learning Teams” was published. The authors were Brent Sutton (safety), Glynis McCarthy (adult education), Brent Robinson (operational excellence) and foreword by Dr Todd Conklin.

The book has become the how to guide of not only “how to run a learning team” but also using learning teams to learn from events, change and learning from everyday normal work. More importantly, how to build on your current skills and understanding to become an effective Learning Teams facilitator.

This is an ideal opportunity for people who want to understand;

  • The purpose and value of using Learning Teams to learn from events
  • The value of using Learning Teams to improve your critical risk management
  • The value of using Learning Teams to improve your worker engagement, participation and representation with frontline workers
  • How to get senior leadership to become curious about the value of learning and improving safety
