The AGM will be followed by a presentation from Dr Casey Davies PhD, from Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury) on Radiation Safety.
“For a nuclear-free society, we sure do have a lot of radiation around us. It’s in the ground, in the air, in our food, and even within our bodies. But what constitutes a radiation hazard and how do we manage this? Within this morning’s presentation, Dr Casey Davies, Health and Safety Business Partner at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury) and a chemical consultant, will discuss radiation within a New Zealand context and teach you some fundamental physics, so that you know what radiation is, how we measure it and at what point it becomes dangerous.
Casey has a PhD in biophysical chemistry and a post graduate diploma in health sciences (occ health). He has taught chemical and environmental risk management, biophysics, fundamental chemistry, and chemical bias at the Universities of Otago and Waikato. He was the radiation protection officer, chemical safety officer, and delegated operator for the University of Waikato and is a current member of the Part 18 Laboratory working group developing a new SWI with WorkSafe. Casey holds licences for unsealed/sealed radioactive material, and fixed and handheld irradiating apparatus. In addition to laboratory management, Casey was a volunteer senior firefighter with FENZ for 9 years and is a current professional member of NZISM and registered on HASANZ.”
