Whakaari: Legal insights and business implications

A number of senior NZISM members/supporters were closely involved in the legal proceedings that resulted from the tragic Whakaari eruption that killed 22 people and injured a further 25, in December 2019. Now the proceedings have drawn to a close, we are in a position to ask those involved to share their insights.

First up, to provide legal insights and to summarise the business implications that resulted, we are delighted to be joined by two of New Zealand's leading specialist health and safety lawyers:

Grant and Garth will be sharing their reflections on this significant case and discussing implications for businesses going forward. There will be an opportunity for attendees to put their questions to Grant and Garth in the Q&A session at the end.

On 29 May Dr Chris Peace, who was called by the WorkSafe prosecution to act as an expert witness, will be following up with his own insights and 'take homes' from the case.

Grant Nicholson
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading health and safety lawyers, Grant has extensive experience in all aspects of health and safety law. His style is warm and collaborative, and he enjoys getting out to see his clients “in the real world
”. Doyle’s Guide describes him as “pre-eminent” in health and safety and he is also ranked by Chambers & Partners, which notes his “strong reputation
”. Legal 500 says Grant “is an authority on prosecutions”.

Clients include construction and infrastructure companies, Crown entities, distributors, insurance companies, logistics providers, manufacturers, not-for-profits, ports, producers, retailers, territorial authorities, utilities companies, and others on their health and safety needs.

Garth Gallaway
