Join the Women In Safety Excellence (WISE) network in the third of their 'Women in Safety II' series, facilitated by nationally recognised Safety Differently specialist, Moni Hogg.

In this session, Nicola Knobel will unveil how Whānau Āwhina Plunket, a well-known New Zealand organisation, has successfully implemented the proactive Safety-II model, enriched with Te Ao Māori principles. This case study is a testament to the effectiveness of cultural inclusivity in safety management, showcasing a shift from traditional safety models to one that focuses on positive outcomes and resilience.

Nicola Knobel is a renowned advocate for integrating cultural values into modern safety practices. Having worked on the innovation at WorkSafe and then being seconded to the Chief Māori Advisor to the Chief Executive at WorkSafe, Nicola specialises in blending traditional wisdom with contemporary health and safety approaches, and their upcoming session will focus on a compelling case study: 'Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s Application of Te Ao Māori in a Safety-II Environment.'

Nicola is a seasoned professional with over 17 years of leadership experience in health, safety, and enterprise risk. Currently serving as the Health, Safety, and Enterprise Risk Manager at Whānau Āwhina Plunket, Nicola is dedicated to fostering proactive health and safety cultures. With a background that spans diverse sectors, including oil and gas, education, and innovation, Nicola brings a unique blend of skills and insights to the table. An advocate for inclusivity and innovation, she actively integrates Te Ao Māori principles into safety programs, emphasizing a holistic approach. Nicola is a finalist for Leader of the Year in Women in Safety, highlighting her commitment to excellence and innovation in health and safety management. Beyond her professional endeavors, she actively contributes to global safety conversations as an ambassador for Women in Safety in New Zealand and is completing her Masters in Law. Nicola is passionate about making a lasting impact in the field of occupational health and safety.
