NZISM throws weight behind a call to review asbestos imports

NZISM News 26 November 2025

NZISM is a proud signatory to the open letter calling for an urgent review of the import settings that allowed asbestos containing materials to be imported in children's toys and fire doors.

Asbestos kills more than 220 people in New Zealand every year. It has been illegal to import asbestos containing materials since 2016 so it has been deeply disappointing to see products containing asbestos coming into the country and potentially exposing workers, families and children.

The open letter was published by 45 health and safety professional bodies, medical experts, unions, educators, and others.
