A leading New Zealand energy group is seeking an experienced Senior Health & Safety Specialist to join its People, Safety and Sustainability function based in New Plymouth.

This is a delivery-focused role with real scope to influence how health and safety is embedded across a complex, regulated environment. You’ll work at both a practical and strategic level, supporting the business to strengthen critical risk management, improve systems and lift outcomes over time.

Reporting to a senior leader within People, Safety and Sustainability, this role supports the design, development and delivery of fit-for-purpose health and safety programmes, processes and initiatives. You’ll work closely with operational teams and senior stakeholders to ensure solutions are practical, understood and valued by the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering health and safety initiatives and projects to agreed timeframes and quality standards
  • Leading the development and enhancement of policies, procedures, standards and processes, written in clear, plain English
  • Supporting critical risk projects including risk assessments, Bowties and control effectiveness
  • Facilitating workshops and engaging leaders and technical teams to embed new approaches
  • Ensuring legislative requirements and best practice are up to date and embedded
  • Using data and insights to support reporting, dashboards and decision-making
  • Contributing to Board and Executive papers and internal reporting
  • Scanning the regulatory and policy environment to inform future direction

This role has no direct reports but plays a key leadership role through influence, coaching and technical expertise.

About you

You’ll be comfortable working in detail while keeping sight of the bigger picture and confident engaging with senior leaders in a high-risk, regulated environment.

You’ll bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in health and safety roles with demonstrable improvement outcomes
  • Experience delivering critical risk or complex H&S initiatives
  • Strong facilitation skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly
  • Proven experience writing fit-for-purpose policies and procedures
  • A practical, collaborative approach and strong stakeholder management skills
  • Sound understanding of New Zealand health and safety legislation
  • A relevant tertiary qualification is preferred but not essential. Project or change management experience is advantageous.
