The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists for a Safety Coordinator to join a high‑risk, process‑driven manufacturing site. This role is for a 6‑month fixed term and is well suited to someone who has practical work experience and knowledge of hazardous waste regulations, as well as safety and environmental legislation, within an operational/manufacturing environment.
About the Role
Reporting to the Senior Manager EHS/MHF, this role provides hands‑on EHS coordination, technical expertise and administrative support to ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate standards.
The position is primarily an implementation focussed role, supporting the planning, execution and oversight of work activities in the manufacturing facility.
You will work closely with site leadership, engineering and operations teams, contributing to safety‑critical systems, permit‑to‑work processes and project delivery activities where safety risk management is essential, using highly effective work planning, control and accurate management of the required EHS records to ensure a safe and compliant operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the implementation of the safety management system to ensure operation of the site is conducted in a controlled and predictable manner
- Maintain an active management presence in the field, modelling visible safety leadership and providing coaching or intervention as required
- Support compliance with New Zealand health and safety regulations including:
- Consultation between operations, engineering and contractors to ensure all stakeholders are participating and represented in works
- Planning and scheduling of works to support the site from the health and safety perspective to ensure efficient and effective implementation
- Reviews and risk assessments of contractor and owner work method statements
- Incorporation of controls into work permits
- Provide clear explanation of permit conditions to contractors/work owners and manage the delivery and issuance of permits
- Contractor management and qualification to guarantee compliance with company requirements and industry best practice
- Support site recordkeeping activities to ensure accurate and timely submissions of reports to regulatory agencies
- In conjunction with the EHS Coordinator and Site Leader, assist in the scheduling, review and practice of site emergency response plans/activities (ERP)
- Lead or actively participate in incident investigations to identify root causes and corrective actions
- Assist in implementing the site’s Industrial Hygiene requirements
- Participate in audits conducted at the site, and partner with regional EHS, divisional and/or site management to ensure audit findings are closed out and audit recommendations implemented
About You
You are technically capable, detail‑oriented and confident working in high‑risk industrial environments.
You will be comfortable navigating safety and environmental systems and engaging with engineers, operators and leaders to ensure policies and procedures are embedded into everyday operations and project activities.
You communicate clearly, document thoroughly and bring a practical mindset to managing risk and have relevant experience working within a manufacturing environment.
What You Will Bring
- Relevant qualifications in environmental or occupational health sciences/health and safety
- Experience in execution of project works within a manufacturing environment
- Familiar with safety and environmental regulations including air, wastewater, storm water, solid and hazardous waste
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Great leadership, training, problem solving and decision‑making skillset
- Experience in an operational/manufacturing environment and maintenance projects is essential
