About the role

In this highly operational Health & Safety Manager role, the successful candidate will be a credible, experienced health and safety professional who can quickly build trust with operational leaders, crews and subcontractors while balancing requirements with the business’ wider health and safety framework. Working across a large and geographically dispersed area, the role requires strong coaching and influencing skills, sound judgement and the ability to operate confidently in a dynamic, high-risk environment.

The focus is on supporting and enabling safe operations, making strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills essential.

Duties

  • Coach and support operational leaders and frontline teams on health and safety best practice.
  • Build strong relationships with subcontractors and oversee contractor safety performance.
  • Lead incident investigations and drive corrective actions.
  • Conduct site visits, audits and assurance activities across the network.
  • Maintain and build key stakeholder relationships.

Skills and experience

You will bring strong influencing and stakeholder management skills, be comfortable working autonomously and travelling daily to support frontline teams at various locations from Rakaia to Arthur’s Pass and north of Kaikoura.

  • Demonstrated experience in a senior Health and Safety advisory, business partner or management role.
  • Ability to build credibility and influence at all levels of the business.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring approach.
  • Experience working in high-risk operational environments such as civil construction, infrastructure, roading, maintenance or similar industries
  • Comfortable spending significant time in the field engaging with crews and contractors.
  • Ability to work within established systems and frameworks.
  • Professional maturity, sound judgement and decision-making capability.
  • Adaptable and able to operate effectively in a dynamic, changing environment.
