The opportunity

Step into a leadership role where you will lead, influence and stabilise health and safety delivery across a large and geographically dispersed Southern Region.

Ideally based in Dunedin, with flexibility across Invercargill, Queenstown, Timaru or Oamaru, this role offers a unique opportunity to select and shape the future of a new team.

About the role and environment

Reporting to the GM Health and Safety, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across district within your portfolio. You will lead a team, partner with senior operational leaders and ensure consistent implementation of safety programmes, systems and compliance requirements.

You will operate in a public-facing, high-risk environment where services cannot simply stop, requiring a pragmatic and resilient approach to risk management, incident response and stakeholder engagement. The region has undergone significant change, with a new structure implemented.

Now, the focus is on:

  • Rebuilding capability and stability
  • Establishing clear ways of working
  • Creating alignment across different operational areas
  • Strengthening culture and team cohesion

This is a challenging but high-impact opportunity to reset and lead a team through its next phase.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of health and safety programmes across the district
  • Develop and implement safety plans and strategic initiatives for the region
  • Provide expert advice to senior leaders and operational teams
  • Lead and support investigations, including high-level ICAM reviews
  • Monitor performance, compliance and risk across multiple sites
  • Drive continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of health and safety professionals
  • Support recruitment and capability uplift within the team

About you and what you will bring

You are an experienced safety leader who combines technical expertise with strong people leadership. You are comfortable working in ambiguity, managing competing priorities, and influencing across a wide range of stakeholders.

You bring patience, resilience and the ability to navigate complex team dynamics, while building trust and alignment across diverse groups.

In order to achieve success in this position you will have:

  • Significant experience in health and safety, including leadership roles
  • Experience in complex, high-risk, public-facing environments
  • Strong capability in risk, investigations, and safety systems
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams through change
  • Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work across multiple sites and competing priorities
  • Experience in sectors such as healthcare, government, policing, education or similar (beneficial)
