Health & Safety Practitioner - Wareing Group, Canterbury

The Wareing Group is a successful family owned and operated transport company consisting of six South Island transport businesses and commercial property portfolios, and have been operating for over 50 years. Our mission is to be a premier provider of transport solutions. We aim to achieve this by providing services that consistently exceed our customers’ expectations. We have a combined fleet of over 250 trucks and 330 staff and thus, no job is too big or too small - from carting straw & baleage or logs, through to picking up one carton in Christchurch on our daily freight run. With five of our businesses located in regional towns, supporting and being involved in these communities is also very important to us. 

About The Role: 

The Health and Safety Practitioner will deliver leading practice health and safety strategies and systems for the entities. The role provides health and safety reporting and advice to the Board, Senior Leadership team, operational managers, dispatchers and drivers. 

Skills and Experience: 

  • Maintain and continue to develop the current H&S system 
  • Promote continuous improvements in health and safety systems and tools 
  • Monitor health and safety processes to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements
  • Work proactively with NZTA, WorkSafe & ACC 
  • Implement structured health and safety audit processes 
  • Ensure effective health and safety management of policies, procedures, and technologies 
  • Implement training delivery and record processes to educate staff in safe methods of work 
  • Encourage maximum reporting of all incidents/near misses 
  • Ability to carry out high level accident/incident investigations 
  • Lead, maintain and continue to develop a positive H&S culture within the business 
  • Standard Operating Procedure review and development 
  • Carry out risk assessments 
  • Continue to develop the long-term H&S strategy 
  • Ensure all H&S requirements are adhered to and compliance is maintained 
  • Software management 
  • Monitor employee training and development. 

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • A comprehensive understanding of the NZ H&S Legislation, knowledge of hazardous substances regulations, plus experience leading risk management processes 
  • A sound knowledge of Health & Safety processes with proven experience of at least 3-5 years within a similar business environment as well as proven experience managing Health and Safety within a high-risk environment 
  • A logical thinker with practical understanding 
  • A relevant Health and Safety qualification preferable 
  • An ability to adapt and thrive with the changing requirements of this role, whilst also being focused on delivering results and continuous improvement 
  • A collaborative style, alignment with our values and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and do the operational activities, as well as the strategic 
  • Great organisation skills 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • A strong commitment to a safe work environment 
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively (both written and oral communication) with a wide range of people in all situations

  • An affinity with the agricultural and farming sectors. 
  • Ideally this role would be Mid-Canterbury based but we will consider a location slightly further afield.
