Health and Safety Business Partner – Hutt Valley #1603001

The opportunity

This is an opportunity for an experienced Health and Safety Business Partner to step into a role where you will influence, coach and drive meaningful safety outcomes across complex New Zealand operational environments, within the health sector.

You won’t just maintain systems – you will actively shape how safety is delivered, working closely with leaders and teams to improve risk management, strengthen compliance and embed practical solutions. There will also be a requirement for time to be shared on site in the Hutt Valley and Wellington, plus other regional sites as needed.

About the role

You will partner with operational leaders and frontline teams to provide practical advice, coaching and assurance, with a strong focus on critical risk management and continuous improvement.

This is a hands-on role requiring visibility in the field, balanced with the ability to step back, analyse trends, and drive improvements across systems and processes.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strong advisory support across health and safety and compliance
  • Lead assurance and verification activities across operational environments
  • Support and participate in serious incident investigations (ICAM preferred)
  • Coach leaders and teams on safe work practices and risk management
  • Support compliance with ACC AEP, ISO 45001 and HSWA 2015 requirements
  • Maintain and improve health and safety systems and processes
  • Support implementation of safety initiatives and programmes
  • Contribute to risk management frameworks, including critical risks
  • Deliver or support training and capability development
  • Analyse safety data and support reporting (desirable)

About you

You are an experienced safety professional who is confident working in complex, fast-paced environments. You combine strong technical knowledge with the ability to build relationships, influence behaviour and drive change.

You communicate clearly, work collaboratively and bring a practical, solutions-focused approach to safety.

What you will bring

  • Advisory experience in health and safety within NZ environments
  • Strong knowledge of compliance frameworks (ACC AEP, ISO 45001, HSWA)
  • Experience in assurance, verification, and compliance activities
  • Proven capability in serious incident investigations (ICAM preferred)
  • Strong understanding of risk management and critical risks
  • Experience delivering or facilitating HS training and coaching
  • Experience implementing HS systems and initiatives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and influence across all levels

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in data analysis and reporting
  • Project management capability within the health sector
  • Hazardous substances management experience
