There are lots of great reasons to join NZISM:
As an NZISM member, you have access to an unrivalled suite of membership benefits:
We offer several membership categories, each with different rights and obligations. Full details are outlined in our Constitution.
General Membership
Our most common membership type—ideal for anyone interested in the occupational health and safety sector. General members can apply for NZISM accreditation, more information on becoming accredited can be found here.
Student Membership
Available to members enrolled in full‑time in tertiary education, or completing at least 60 credits, in an approved H&S course.
Life Membership
Awarded to NZISM members who have made significant contributions to NZISM and the wider health and safety profession. Life Membership can only be granted or rescinded by Board resolution.
Honorary Membership
Awarded in select circumstances as determined by the Board or CEO.
Retired Membership
For members who have retired from their professional career but wish to stay connected to NZISM and the profession. Retired Members must notify NZISM if they return to work so their membership class can be updated. Email admin@nzism.org if you would like to apply for Retired membership.
To sign up to become a member of NZISM, follow these steps:
Note: Once you are a General Member you can apply for accreditation. You cannot join straight away at an accredited level.
Student membership recognises you are not in full-time paid employment. It provides full benefits but is a half-price subscription. It's our way of supporting you as you develop in the profession.
To qualify you must be enrolled with a tertiary education provider and participating in full-time OHS study OR be enrolled in a recognised course providing a minimum of 60 credits.
NZISM membership subscriptions last a year and expire 12 months after you joined or renewed (unless you have a quarterly subscription).
We have recently moved from a common renewal date, making it simpler for new members to join at any point in the year.
Yes - General Membership is your start point, this category is suitable for professionals who do not yet have New Zealand work experience in occupational health and safety but intend to enter the local workforce.
You can take advantage of our member benefits online:
Once you begin working in New Zealand and meet the relevant criteria, you can progress through our Accreditation Pathway to higher membership grades.
Members without NZ work experience will need to complete HSR Rep Stage 1 training before applying for accreditation. More information on this is on our Accreditation
See our membership, accreditation and reciprocal accreditation webpages for more detail.
