Safety CAP: Workshop 2 - Face to Face Learning Conversations & Trust-Building

Safety Capability Advancement Programme brought to you by Georgina Poole

Creating Insight Through Dialogue

This workshop builds the interpersonal and relational capability needed for effective learning conversations.

You will learn how to create open, honest, resistance-free dialogue that reveals the reality of work without blame, fear, or defensiveness. The workshop focuses on asking better questions, structuring meaningful conversations, and developing the emotional and conversational intelligence required to build trust quickly and respectfully.

Through immersive practice, attendees learn how to guide conversations toward shared understanding and collective problem-solving. This workshop focuses entirely on how to talk with workers in ways that lead to deeper insight — not how to analyse or observe work (those skills are addressed in Workshops 1 and 3).

Why attend?
Because the quality of the insight you gather depends on the quality of the conversation you create. This workshop gives you the skills to build trust, reduce defensiveness, and discover the information that formal processes rarely uncover.

Key learning objectives:

  1. Ask questions that uncover context, not just facts
  2. Build trust quickly and create psychological ease
  3. Facilitate learning-focused discussions without blame
  4. Manage emotional or sensitive conversations professionally
  5. Co-design solutions with workers through collaborative dialogue

What you'll experience during the day:

  • Live demonstrations of effective vs. ineffective learning conversations
  • Role-play scenarios across different industries and contexts
  • Practical tools for structuring discovery conversations
  • Activities exploring tone, posture, intent, and emotional cues
  • Group exercises developing co-design and collaborative problem-solving skills

You'll walk away with:

  • A refined questioning toolkit
  • Increased confidence connecting with workers
  • Skills for facilitating conversations that lead to genuine learning
  • The ability to surface insights that systems or data alone cannot reveal
  • A strong relational foundation for Workshop 3
