Online Meeting: Psychosocial Risk SIG - Systems Perspective on Psychosocial Risk

Rethinking psychosocial risk through a systems lens

Most approaches to psychosocial risk treat it as a tame problem – one that can be identified, categorised, and managed through the right tools and compliance processes.

This session challenges that assumption.

Drawing on systems thinking, it argues that psychosocial risk is better understood as a wicked challenge: shaped by the design of work itself, sustained by organisational dynamics, and often made invisible by the structures meant to manage it.

Your presenter:
Dr Adam Nebbs is a psychosocial risk governance specialist and founder of PRIME Workplace Strategies, an independent consultancy supporting organisations to build systems-informed, regulatory-ready approaches to psychological health and safety. Adam is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania, Adam's doctoral and applied research spans psychosocial risk governance, implementation science, and ISO 45003 — the international standard for psychological health and safety at work. His peer-reviewed work, published in Safety Science, examined ISO 45003 implementation across six Australian organisations, translating research into practical insight for regulators, practitioners, and leaders. With nine years of frontline leadership experience and a track record of working with government, utilities, and professional bodies across Tasmania and nationally, Adam bridges regulatory obligation and organisational reality. His consulting work encompasses governance reviews, risk assessments, audits, and facilitated capability building with a particular focus on why compliance-focused approaches so often fall short of genuine risk reduction.
