The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. As such, workplace wellbeing is more than the absence of people struggling or being unwell.
This aligns with Hollnagel’s incremental view of safety, which argues that (i) safety is about the presence of capacity not just the absence of accidents and incidents and (ii) to achieve a state of safety, we need to understand and promote the factors that mean things usually go right.
Perhaps, then, to achieve a state of wellbeing, we need understand – and design into work – the factors that support people to thrive not merely control the factors that can cause them to struggle or become unwell.
The key drivers of workplace wellbeing will be explored.
