Health & Safety Policy

NZISM is committed to keeping its members and people we work with free from harm by generating the world’s best health and safety outcomes. We will do this by:
- No harm to people and no damage to the environment.
- Observing and working within NZ legislation and industry guidelines as a minimum standard.
- Taking personal responsibility for making health and safety an essential part of our organisation.
- Preserving the health and wellbeing of our people so they go home safely.
- Being safe in our everyday work.
- Sharing our results and what happens as we do our work, celebrating the good and actively learning from incidents.
- Providing thought leadership and best practice to our peers while inspiring people to create workplaces free from harm.
NZISM demonstrates that Health and safety matters by:
- Sharing our experience, competence and learnings.
- Influencing continuously better outcomes by the way we model health and safety.
- Our members adhering to the NZISM’s policy’s and processes whenever carrying out work, for or on behalf of the NZISM.
- Having a health and safety management system, designed to manage hazards and risks, this is implemented through a cycle of continuous improvement.
- Expecting our business partners to manage health and safety in line with this policy and intervening when they don’t.
- Keeping our people informed by communicating policy, setting targets and measuring our performance.
Authority
- The Governance Board and the Senior Leadership Team or their delegated authorities are responsible for ensuring the intent of this policy is achieved.
- The NZISM Senior Leadership Team will review this policy annually and make amendments and reissue it as necessary.
Equal Employment Policy

Aim of this policy
To define NZISM's commitment to upholding the highest standards of equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion.
Objectives
To provide equal opportunity of employment and engagement regardless of sex, gender, marital status, religion, ethical belief, colour, race, ethnicity or national origins, disability, age, political opinion, employment status, family status or sexual orientation.
To identify and eliminate any barriers that cause or perpetuate inequality within our organisation. We will also ensure that all appointments to roles within NZISM are made on the basis of merit and support equal pay for all based on qualification and experience.
To establish opportunities within NZISM either directly or indirectly through partnerships to provide support and increase development opportunities to those who are traditionally under-represented at senior leadership levels, in particular women, Māori and Pacific people.

Psychological Wellbeing Policy

Aim of this policy
To define NZISM's role as New Zealand’s leading professional association for health and safety practitioners and professionals, who are dedicated to providing an exemplar workplace that is healthy and safe for all those that engage with our organisation, whether they are employees, contractors, volunteers or members.
Objectives
We commit to identifying the risks within our organisation that may cause psychological harm or illness and either eliminate or minimise the effects of these. We will also ensure that our approach to work aims to increase psychological wellbeing by providing a culture of open and active engagement across all levels of the organisation. We will create an environment where people are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, treated with respect and have multiple avenues to raise issues and concerns. We will not tolerate bullying, harassment or any other discriminatory behaviour.

That anyone working within NZISM whether an employee, contractor, volunteer or member upholds the organisational commitment to providing an exemplar workplace leading health and safety practice.
Treaty of Waitangi Policy

Aim of this policy
The aim of this policy is to acknowledge that NZISM recognises that New Zealand has a multicultural heritage and is committed to the spirit of partnership, participation and protection embodied by Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi).
Objectives
Partnership: working together with Te Ropu Marutau o Aotearoa (Māori Health and Safety Association) as a key partner and stakeholder to NZISM.
Protection: actively protecting Māori knowledge, interests, values, and other tāonga. We do this through acknowledging that respecting identity, language, and values are important aspects of a culturally aware practitioner/professional. NZISM commits to knowing, respecting and valuing where members are, where they come from, and further developing what they bring with them to our organisation.
Participation: Working with our partners to grow engagement with Māori across the health and safety profession. Creating leadership opportunities for Māori, from Emerging Safety Leaders through to Governance
Membership Leave Policy
Date: October 2020
Aim of this policy
To define the policy for members who wish to take a membership holiday regardless of the reason.
Objectives
The objective of the policy is to articulate the 12 months break that NZISM will apply to accredited members who wish to stand down their membership for any reason whatsoever.
For all purposes, members will be granted 12 months grace from membership lapse to re-joining NZISM and will be able to retain their relevant accreditation grade. Upon expiration of the 12-month period, if a member has not renewed their membership, they will forfeit any previous grading and will be required to join NZISM as an affiliate and reapply for accreditation.
Safe Driving Policy
Date: September 2019
Aim of this policy
To eliminate or reduce vehicle related injuries by promoting a safe driving culture within the organisation.
Objectives
To ensure that those who drive vehicles in the course of their work for NZISM role model safe, efficient driving skills and other good road safety habits at all times.
To ensure vehicles are in a safe, clean and roadworthy condition to ensure the maximum safety of the drivers, occupants and other road users– this also applies to personal vehicles used for work purposes.
Expectations
As the leading professional body for health and safety in New Zealand it is important that we set a high standard. We expect that NZISM staff, contractors and volunteers comply with traffic legislation, are conscious of road safety and demonstrate safe driving and other good road safety habits. Where possible we aim to hold virtual meetings using Zoom technology so as to eliminate or reduce the amount of travel involved.
To ensure the driver is as safe as possible we expect that on NZISM business the following actions are taken:
- drive a roadworthy vehicle or a vehicle suitable for the conditions (use of chains or 4WD)
- do not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- use hands free mode for mobiles - and then only for very short duration calls
- ensure you are appropriately rested
- only drive a vehicle if you are appropriately licensed
- follow defensive driving practices and drive to the conditions
- drivers should always stop after a crash or report injury or damage to yourself, another person or property
