Peter Taylor's presentation ‘Attitude change: The challenges and ideas’ from the 12 June 2018 NZISM Manawatu branch meeting.

Discussion on challenges of engaging people in health and safety. This included aspects on traits of clients, size of organisation, current status (existing system might not be relevant to that business, do they understand it, are they using it) – where to start with new clients. Some have received misleading information, the new Act created some ‘panic’ resulting in scaremongering and also media distortion.

Common sense approach on competency, awareness and understanding. It’s not always about documentation, also use observation, demonstration and have conversations. Look at critical risks. Consider time lost if things go wrong and relate issues to productivity levels.

Increase in awareness level is needed, including legal sector practitioners. Culpability of the PCBU (duty of care) was noted as was whether deterrents are effective.

Discussion also included employee participation and engagement, and how to get buy in from staff, several methods came from this.
