About the opportunity

As National Health and Safety Manager (H&S), reporting to the GM Operational Safety and covering several sites across the Lower North Island Region, which includes Waikato and Taranaki, you will ensure Fonterra has the regulatory strategy, capability, and capacity to ensure our people are safe and we meet all H&S requirements.

In this varied and challenging role, you will manage a team of 7 direct reports – 6 H&S Advisors and one H&S Manager.

Proactively you will help develop our H&S strategy and systems to provide expertise to the Fonterra business.

While providing excellent management and guidance to your team you will be able to travel to several sites frequently and are willing to travel across a large geographically spread region across Taranaki and Waikato.

Key responsibilities include:

Ensure an overview of trends and developments in H&S legislation is maintained

Ensure Business Units act in accordance with the regulatory framework, and monitor and report on compliance

Provide guidance and strategic direction for the Health and Safety teams

Please note that you can be based in various locations with the option to work from home but must be willing and flexible to travel to several sites (Whareroa, Eltham, Kapuni, Longburn, Paihiatua, Hamilton) as required. You could be based in Hamilton, New Plymouth, Taupo, and other cities if you are open to travel. Please note that this role comes with a company car with personal use.

About You

We are looking for an exceptional leader who brings diversity of thought and long-term Health and Safety expertise to the role. As an accomplished manager within the H&S sector you know how to influence without authority and guide your team to success.

Having worked in food production/manufacturing is beneficial but not required. As a strong H&S generalist with robust understanding around legislation and implementation of H&S programmes plus management expertise you will be able to hit the ground running.

To make an impact in this role you will have:

Strong technical health and safety expertise

Exposure to process safety

Excellent communication skills, ability to influence, ability to build effective relationships with a wide variety of people

Tertiary qualification in management or technical discipline, with a key focus on Health & Safety

Demonstrated management role in delivery of regulatory H&S strategy in a large and complex business

Exposure and understanding of Major Hazard Facilities would be ideal

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment plus being adaptable to change and ambiguity
