Port Marlborough offers an excellent opportunity for a capable individual to make this newly created role their own. Based in Picton, the Health and Safety Advisor will be a crucial member of the Port Marlborough team who together deliver safe work across operations including international shipping, domestic shipping including interisland ferry terminals, fishing, aquaculture and barging; Waikawa, Picton and Havelock Marinas; infrastructure maintenance and capital development projects.

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor will have a strong onsite operational presence combined with administrative responsibilities. He or she will be instrumental in motivating best health and safety practice and fostering positive safety culture whilst also delivering timely and competent systems support, technical advice and coaching. Maintaining and administering the Health and Safety Management Plan, policies, procedures, and activity plan including the hazard/risk management system whilst contributing to wellness initiatives are all part of this diverse role.

To be the right person for this new role you will need previous experience in a safety specific role or a role with a strong safety component (e.g. contracting, construction, manufacturing) and, ideally, a related qualification. Strong relationship skills are essential with the ability to partner with colleagues and multiple stakeholders, developing and maintaining constructive relationships which build a high level of trust. Combined with this you will need a sound understanding of ‘what good looks like’ in safety systems and practice and a pragmatic and energetic approach.
