The Health, Safety and Well-being team is looking for a Hazardous Substances Advisor to join us in a permanent capacity on our Manawatū campus. The Health, Safety and Wellbeing team sits within our University Services Group.

About the role

The purpose of this position is to provide support and advise the University on safe and compliant life-cycle management of hazardous substances and laboratory good practice to comply with all relevant legislation and standards to ensure the safety of staff and students. Additionally, the role provides oversight of inventory management and disposal systems.

There is plenty of opportunity to interact with staff and students through delivery of training, practical support, and further developing the existing hazardous substances systems, resources, policies and procedures to enhance safety and compliance in this area.

About you

You'll have experience working in a chemistry type laboratory, preferably within a university, other tertiary teaching environment or an industrial setting. Laboratory safety is always top of mind for you. You will have the ability to think and act calmy under pressure. We are looking for an innovative thinker, as compliance is not always black and white.

Additionally, you'll have the following:

A natural ability to relate to a wide range of people, lab staff, students, and senior managers

Previous experience delivering training to a wide-ranging audience

Experience with or a good understanding of hazardous substance disposal

Competence with computer systems generally and ability to quickly learn new software

Bachelor's degree in chemistry or similar
