Te Whare Tapa Whā is one of many models used to visualise Māori wellbeing and health and translates to a house with four sides. Each “side” represents one of the four elements of wellbeing and health: Tinana (Physical); Wairua (Spiritual); Whanau (Relationships) and Hinengaro (Consciousness), and together they support the whole. Simple, easy to understand with relevant elements... however it's not quite as simple as that. Māori have holistic beliefs with many concepts that are considered, negotiated or directing in unity to achieve a whole state of being. Wayne will reveal some key principles that will help our understanding of Te Whare Tapa whā and Māori as a people.
Wayne Kohi is the current Chairperson of Te Rōpu Marutau o Aotearoa (also known as the Māori Health and Safety Professionals of NZ). He has been working in the health and safety profession for many years and has recently started Kohi EHS Consultancy Limited.
