Managing the complexity of overlapping duties
Certified NZISM member and Chair of the NZISM Advisory Board Mike Cosman takes a look at the complexity of managing overlapping duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. The days of top down management of health and safety have been replaced with new obligations to manage up, down and sideways in many instances. Mike will be exploring the opportunities available to PCBUs to rethink their current ‘contractor management’ strategies by drawing on his growing base of experience providing advice under the new Act.
Mike was the only health and safety professional member of the Independent Taskforce on Workplace Health and Safety and hence has an excellent understanding of the rationale behind the new legislation as well as extensive experience of interpreting it in different contexts. Mike is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded health and safety professionals with 40 years’ experience in operational, management, policy and strategic roles.
Mike holds an Honours degree in management, postgraduate qualifications in OHS and a Certificate in Company Direction from the IoD. Mike is on the HASANZ Register and an accredited SafePlus assessor, a Chartered Member of IOSH, Certified Member of the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management and a Member of the NZ Institute of Directors.
