FISC, WorkSafe and First Union co-designed a pilot aimed at increasing forestry workers involvement in health and safety. FISC engaged two regional champions, called Toroawhi, to do this work. Two Toroawhi began work for FISC in January 2020, as part of a one-year trial funded by WorkSafe; this has since been extended. The role of the Toroawhi is to: • Advocate for greater worker involvement in health and safety decision-making. This includes demonstrating the benefits of greater worker engagement and supporting workers and businesses to develop their own ways of doing this. • Build worker capability so they can play a more active role. Building the skills of workers helps them become more confident about speaking up and influencing health and safety. • Help embed worker involvement in everyday work practices. This includes mentoring workers and crew foremen/owners to improve levels of engagement and to come up with ways of building this engagement into everyday work activities. Fiona will talk through the pilot and what she has learnt being part of this project.
